The Army did this Drill Sergeant wrong. Tragic that the privates were killed and injured, but it is TRADOC and big Army working the DS without adequate rest that caused this

When I was stationed as a DS Candidate in '92, we worked so long that I was often blind with sleep on the way to work each day. After getting there early to prepare, doing all the days duties, seeing the recruits to bed, then go home iron a uniform, spit-shine boots, and try to be a Dad and husband, it was tough to not be sleepy driving in to work in the dark every day.

Complacency kills. So does sleep deprivation! The human body is not designed to function on four hours of sleep (or 5 or 6) day-in and day-out.
Those who say they are 'used to it'? It's just the five cups of coffee and two large size energy drinks talking, not to mention those who dip or smoke (nicotine is also a stimulant like caffeine).
