Ar-10. Modular. Upgradable for future iterations & changes. It has advantages over the M-40. Also makes the logistics chain MUCH simpler as it is "near identical" to the M16/M4 platform, and has greater commonality of parts (specifically accessories).
"Critical Necessity?" No. Good forward thinking? Yes.
Will it serve the forces well? Yes. Tried and true technology.

6" sharter and 3lbs lighter than the rifle it replaces. Modified from the G-28 that is already in service with the Bundeswehr. Sounds like a winner to me.
