If wrong doing is found. It should be punished. But, Islam is not a race. Therefore, this is not racism.

PO1 Henry Jackson - I support your right to believe that. But, one can not be racist against a religion/political system.
Have a good day.

MSgt (Join to see) - Marine Corps Drill Instructors are not known for soliciting opinions of recruits. While you could make an argument perhaps that they knew his religious affiliation assuming the recruit claimed it I still am reluctant to accept it as the primary or only cause of his demise.
I know how people "trapped" at Parris Island behave. We all had at least a few that would do whatever possible to get out. Including faking injuries, attempting suicide, filing false claims, having emotional breakdowns, failing tests (PFT and other). We had a guy drink a bottle of wisk trying to kill himself. He was not successful but we never saw him again either. Our next informal period of instruction from the DI's was on how to correctly kill ourselves. One of which was a leap off the third level stairwell.
It is very possible, even likely that this recruit was in over his head at Parris Island. He did not want to be there and he showed some weakness and the Drill Instructors saw it and pushed him. He may not have been able to cope and consequently took his own life.
I don't know all of the facts in this case and we probably never will. There will be an official story that comes from the Marine Corps designed to make it look like action was taken, people were prosecuted and punished and changes were made to training regimens and other training protocols etc. etc. etc. Meanwhile we will have people on social media here that will simply toss them into the racist/bigot category because it is how they deal with complex issues.

It was certainly NOT me saying anything about what the marine corps drill instructor did or did not think. I was just making a comment about the differences between calling something racist or bigoted. I do not know if the drill instructor was or was not racist and or bigoted. I have not been following the story. I just hate when people call other people racist even if they have actual bias against muslims. Muslims are not a race. Islam is a religion. So, if someone has an actual bias where they dislike people just based on their relgion they could not by definition be racists because of that. Bigoted, yes. (Because in my opinion religous views qualify as opinions) as far as the story itself your reply would be better directed to henry jackson.

Unfortunately it is stuff like this that weakens the foundation of our military services.
When will the military, US government, and the public as a whole finally come to realize that the 'zero defect approach' and Six Sigma process derived from it does not fit with Professional Development? When will they (the groups stated above) come to the realization that though it may be a good fit for manufacturing and other mechanical type processes, that it is a recipe for disaster when applied to the human race and what is now called Human Resources?

It's so sad when you have drill instructors or drill sergeants act like God and humiliate and punish unnecessarily recruits period it's one thing for discipline thing when it's abuse to the point where they kill themselves

Cpl Jeff N. - The numbers go up when criminals and bigots like this are allowed to be DIs.
DIs are supposed to be the best and tough not what needs to be scraped of the boot with a long stick.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - Another armchair Marine Corps Drill Instructor I see. So quick to pass judgment on them as criminals an bigots. They have many years of honorable service behind them. They have been through one of the hardest schools in the military and are doing the job of making Marines for the future.
These are men whose jock you could not carry and whose job you could never do but you sit behind your keyboard and assassinate their character and cast judgment. I would want them on my left and right in a firefight. You, I wouldn't want anywhere near me.

Cpl Jeff N. - Marine DIs are subject to the UCMJ exactly like everyone else in uniform, and these guy apparently pissed all over that. DI get no special relive from having to obey regulations and the UCMJ
What do you call someone with years of honorable service that commits a crime? A Criminal.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - We both know that the book will be thrown at them regardless of innocence or guilt. They will get hammered by the system because this story needs closure. It needs a villain and who better than a Drill Instructor. They, ultimately, are accountable for the well being of the recruits even though it is next to impossible to keep someone from leaping from the 3rd floor stairwell.
I know how the system works when it needs it's collective six covered. They are expendable in the process and charges are piled on to make them look worse and to make it easy to make them all villains.
