It was because of deployments or schools. I went to Fort Bragg and 2006 for civil Affairs school so I went with my wife the sea Wilmington North Carolina and check out the battleship. When I was deployed to Afghanistan just before I went I went with my family to Charleston and visited the USS Yorktown. When I was put on orders to go to do a Hawaiian version of key resolve in 2011 our exercise Commander gave us a half day off before yes I was going to begin so he went to Pearl Harbor and I did also visit the Arizona as well there which was very emotional. I visited family Deck 84 in Chicago and I went to the museum of science Industry to see the U-boat. Just luck I guess or situational awareness of what museums are around you.

Glad to see my old ship, USS Ranger CV-61, was used as the Forrestal class example. I had the privilege of being a part of two separate Marine Detachments; the USS Long Beach (CGN-9), the largest (at the time) cruiser and the Ranger. I visited the USS New Jersey (BB-62), and the USS Missouri (BB-63) while they were still in service too.
While I was assigned to Naval Sub Base Bangor, with duty at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, I lived on the troop transport USNS General Hugh J. Gaffey (T-AP-121). I have also been aboard (snuck aboard actually) the USS Hornet (CV-12), the USS Bonhomme Richard (CV-31), the USS Oriskany (CV-34), the USS Chicago (CA-136), and the USS Turner Joy (DD-951), along with the submarines George Washington (SSBN-598) and Patrick Henry (SSBN-599) while all were in the reserve fleet at Bremerton, WA. I loved my time at the shipyard exploring the historical ships laid up there.
