Based on my clinical research about combat trauma combatants are clearly armed and primed to kill. Afterwards they are traumatized especially when the kills are proximal and the enemy is quite visible. In general, they loathe killing despite intensive training to do so.
In this situation, he is not armed and confronted with a human wave assault of folks who look like him.
