Speaking as a guy was raised in a GOP house and has evolved into a solid labor Democratic activist I have to point out that the playing field has shifted massively to the right starting in the 1980's. Many a "main stream" D would have been a liberal R into the 1980's.
The big money of the party is heavy with people who, in places like Oregon and Washington would have run and won as Republicans BUT were chased out as RINOS over issues like choice, gun regulations or LGBTQ rights. They WOULD have been the kid of Republican who voted for a program like Head Start becuase the cost benefit penciled out. Right now the party is having a battle between those folks and those of us who think we need to get back to our left progressive alphabet roots (FDR, HST, JFK, LBJ on domestic policy AND re think international policy to better fit 21st century. I mena every time I run a credit/debit card for a student from China to buy lunch and the bank is in China that shifts the equation.
