The McDonnell two-place, twinjet, all-weather F-4 Phantom II, with top speeds more than twice that of sound, was one of the most versatile fighters ever built. It served in the first line of more Western air forces than any other jet. Just 31 months after its first flight, the F-4 was the U.S. Navy's fastest, highest flying and longest range fighter. Can't tell you how much it hurt my heart the first time I saw an F-4 in a museum.
The only thing worse was when I saw them under the knife at the boneyard at Davis-Monthan. It seemed like such a sacrilege.

My dad worked on these before going to the new Astronautics company at MAC and wiring all of the Mercury and Gemini Space Capsules. I remember watching the marines doing there Carrier Quals with these on the Enterprise in 1977. They sure smoked during launch.

Every now and then I would see them over the skies in Germany during field exercises. Mostly it was A 10 close support. It was a treat watching them !
