Both my grandfathers served in WWI, 1SG(P) (Join to see), although neither left the United States. My paternal grandfather, George Curlee served as a corporal at Camp Gordon (where DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in Atlanta is now located). My maternal grandfather, Preuit Holland was a private and never left the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa! He only served two months, but to his credit, he enlisted less than 30 days after his 18th birthday. Curlee is shown at left in the group of three and Holland is in the solo photo. I have the original honorable discharges of each. My paternal grandfather was the company clerk, and wrote up his own discharge. His handwriting was so good it bordered on calligraphy. Go to this museum in Kansas City! Great experience! I went there 3 times while stationed at Fort Riley.
