It seems astonishing that trained sailors, navigators and commanders would run one ship aground let alone seven destroyers SGT John " Mac " McConnell.
I realize that this incident at Honda Point happened before SONAR was developed. But ships tended to take sounding readings before SONAR. The fact that 23 sailors died so close to a home port must have been devastating.

Oh My, Probably why we still practice sallying a ship to this day. The worst thing you can do is run a ship aground, The CO, XO, OOD and Navigator are Fired. It is the Nature of our Business and the Worst Crime that few understand. Easy to do and definitely a career ender.
