Days after a deadly winter storm hit Texas, Alma Roberts finally ventured from her home in Southwest Houston and stood in a long line at a local store in search of water.
“We have been boiling water. We’re running out fast,” Roberts says. “But we're using the last of our drinking water for cooking, for washing dishes, you know, the necessities.”

I thank God that He gave me determination to "come in out of the cold" before winter atorm arrived! Had spent 11 virtually homeless, living in RV I could only heat with low-powered space heater (higher power would hv fried extension cord, might hv even caught RV on fire). I wz determined January's freeze wz as low as I could tolerate; doubted my 7 yr old support pet could tolerate any lower than that.
Finished moving into apt V.A. had helped me get thru HUD-VASH day before "deep freeze" arrived. If I hadn't, there might not hv been room in my daughter's house to take in my son & family (wife, 2 daughters), & my support pet might not hv been allowed to join me at my daughter's coz my daughter already had pet to worry about. Having my "baby" (who'd lived almost her entire life with couple hermits--my ailing husband & me) inside my daughter's home might have been tempestuous in & of itself coz of 2 unrelated bitches (REALLY!!! 2 female dogs) occupying one home.
Became really worrisome for me after 24 hrs without power in temps that steadily decreased. Teacup Chihuahua, 7 yrs old, unable to go outside coz of freezing cold. Am blessed that she has same determination as I.
