I myself can attest to experiencing this very phenomenon and I was once on opioids and what helped me was acupuncture and tai chi. I've had low back pain for 15 years and it has just become habit for me to do the things I need to do to not focus on the distress and suffering aspects. It's hard. Very hard some days but I refuse to do opioids again outside of an emergency.
As an acupuncturist one thing I have noticed is pain connection to emotion is further solidified with poor support and condemnation for disability or lack of performance due to pain. Depression with chronic pain often has this due to family issues or work performance issues. Not always of course but it plays a role.
