Excellent article. Among the guys who spend all their time arguing about guns, the FN FAL is a "battle rifle" because of its weight, .308 cartridge, and long barrel. The AK-47 and M-16 family are "assault rifles" because of lower weight, less powerful cartridges, and barrel length. The distinction never seemed to make much difference to soldiers.
