You get choices... you can succumb to mission creep and lose your focus. Or fight that loss of focus tooth&nail, get labelled a trouble-maker, and shuffled off to a dark corner.

At the bottom of the pig-pile not much can be done to avoid loss of focus from the top.

What CAN be done is those who rise to the top *REMEMBER* that focus and the sheer feeling of *LIFE* that accompanied that focus.

Then work to make it happen.

Joint Publication 3-05—Special Operations identifies 12 separate missions for the various units inside the US military that fall into the SOF category: direct action, hostage rescue, special reconnaissance, counterterrorism, counterinsurgency, counter-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, unconventional warfare, military information support operations (MISO, or psychological operations), security force assistance, foreign internal defense, humanitarian assistance operations, and civil affairs operations.

However an issue not touched on is who and what is driving the CT mission - its not JSOC its the CIA. As such 9/11 set off more than just operations in Afghanistan and Iraq it initiated a profound change in how the country conducts warfare. The military's operations and the CIA's operations have become intertwined. Just look at the transition of General Petraeus and how he was tapped to be the director of the CIA. Rather convenient that a top military general was selected. If you need more proof just google Omega teams. These joint CIA-JSOC units combined the best of the best in military operations as well CIA targeting intelligence.

I'll leave at that but this seems very similar to how the CIA operated in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

The root cause is not egos its the 1947 National Security Act -

Good observation and a great assessment. The CIA is way too intertwined with military operations. The CIA failed in Vietnam and the jury is still out if been a success in Afghanistan.
