I'm am more of an M-1 purist myself. I used to have two.
But I think this is what they were aiming for, just technology wasn't up to it at that time.

There was a smaller M-1 during WWII. I too prefer an M-1 to an M-14

Yeah, the 'tanker' M-1 suffered from excessive recoil due to the short barrel and weight as I recall. SSG Edward Tilton -

Thank you for the share on the M1E5 prototype, might have been a great addition to the M1 line, for use in combat.
