This from a political party that in its time defended slavery, Nazis, communists, and now rallies around antisemites and racists, and seeks to fundamentally change America. And for those of you will take offense and challenge my assertions (especially regarding the defense of Nazism and Communism, check your history - not the altered versions now being taught by progressive Leftists). I stand with Twain and consider his works, especially "Huckleberry Finn", to be great literature worthy of study by American students.

Mark Twain was actually very sympathetic to blacks. Teaching Huckleberry Finn would be great for historical context, where we were and where we have come, and the fact that many influential white people supported the black cause. In many ways Jim was the anchor keeping every one on track. Why do people not understand that today’s sensibilities are different from those in the past? Mark Twain actually helped black students get a college education.

I think more "controversial" books should be required reading in schools, not fewer. If some students are refusing to read a book because it contains words that offends them, how on earth are they going to survive in the real world where your boss, co-workers and strangers won't coddle you?
