Mark Twain was actually very sympathetic to blacks. Teaching Huckleberry Finn would be great for historical context, where we were and where we have come, and the fact that many influential white people supported the black cause. In many ways Jim was the anchor keeping every one on track. Why do people not understand that today’s sensibilities are different from those in the past? Mark Twain actually helped black students get a college education.

I think more "controversial" books should be required reading in schools, not fewer. If some students are refusing to read a book because it contains words that offends them, how on earth are they going to survive in the real world where your boss, co-workers and strangers won't coddle you?
