First, let me say that I hate the wasteful spending by our gov't. However, if you've worked for the gov't (especially in the DC metro area), you know this is a common practice. I worked for a GS-15 that spent about half of that for his office. (Do you know how many GS-15s there are in DC?) Hell, the gov't spent about $1,500 for a new chair for me! (After my neck/spine surgery, I told them I needed a chair with head and neck support...that's it...nothing fancy.) After convo leave, I came back to see the most popular chair in the building. The folks in DC don't operate like we do/did in the military. Most of my time in the Navy, we had chairs that looked like we found them at the dump. Not here. Every one of our gov't employees have new, high-backed, leather chairs. (Contractors have the mesh, ergonomic chairs) Bottom line is that you're right, Sec. Carson doesn't need $31k furniture...but neither did Obama's cabinet or W's, or Bubba's, or HW's....as well as the prima donna senior gov't workers...

We would never have spent $31,000 on a dining room set for Army executives. I had a NASA boss that i thought spent a little frivolously but even he couldn't have done it. We had furniture like yours, old hand-me-downs. BTW, I had a mesh chair too!
