The end of the battle, 17 November 1965 was four years to the day before I enlisted in the Army SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL and about five years before I even headed to Nam. They were brave soldiers, the whole lot.

Thanks for sharing SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL the Ia Drang Valley was the proof of principle for airmobile operations early in the Vietnam War as soldiers were brought to a remote area of a plateau in the Central Highlands where the Drang River.
Many heroes showed their character in those coming days.

Click on the picture to read the rest of the story. This battle--and some immediately before and after it in the same area--convinced Giap they could win a long protracted war against the Americans. They had already outlasted the Japanese and kicked out the French.

I wonder if our Congress--and our Presidents Ike, JFK, and LBJ--understood that the communists in Vietnam were highly experienced fighters and leaders? Did our leaders rely on a selective memory of WWII to think we could defeat anyone, anywhere?
