Without capitalism, the government would be broke. They can't reign in their spending, they can't balance a budget, and they all, mostly, become extremely wealthy by creating tax schemes that steal from the public while greasing lobbyists with lucrative deals that stifle the free-market.
Before 1913 there was no income tax and the career criminals, err politicians modified the Constitution (16th Amendment) to give themselves a license to steal from the public. But I suspect a more sinister reason to pass the 16th, they needed a way to pay interest on the Federal Reserve (FR) loans and were lobbied by the private bankers, or the board of regents from the FR to pass that amendment. I would almost bet if you researched the majority of congressmen who sponsored/co-sponsored that amendment, you will find a trail of nepotism and cronyism to today's career criminals.
