The Indian Massacre of 1622 took place in the English Colony of Virginia, in what is now the United States, on Friday, 22 March 1622. John Smith, though he had not been in Virginia since 1609 and was not a first hand eyewitness, related in his History of Virginia that braves of the Powhatan "came unarmed into our houses with deer, turkeys, fish, fruits, and other provisions to sell us".[1] The Powhatan grabbed any tools or weapons available and killed all English settlers they found, including men, women, and children of all ages. Chief Opechancanough led a coordinated series of surprise attacks by the Powhatan Confederacy that killed 347 people, a quarter of the English population of the Virginia colony.

SGT (Join to see) My 9th-great grandfather John Price survived the events of 1622 (his first wife was one of those killed). He subsequently married his second wife (Ann Mathews), and I am one of the beneficiaries of his persistence. Thanks for the post.

Maj William W. 'Bill' Price My family were in Virginia at about the same time, notably the Dudley, Layton, Mitchell, Foster, and Gatewood Families. Your term "the beneficiaries of his persistence" was well stated! Lol!

In those early days the natives could have driven whites out but they couldn't get along

SSG Edward Tilton That one attack alone killed a fourth of the entire European population at that time. They could have easily sent the entire group of Europeans packing.
