As a child growing up in the Valley in California, we often made extra spending money picking fruit when it came in season. However, as the migrant workers (at that time called braceros) moved north, we got less work. The foreman of the farm would call us all together. He would tell us the braceros would pick the fruit for 20 cents a flat, while we were making 50 cents a flat. He would go on to tell us we had the option, accept the 20 cents or quit. We usually quit.
That is not to knock the braceros. They were hard working people.

They do the work other don't want to do for a lower wage, but they are very industrious.

My father grew up on a big farm in Nebraska. It's not easy...Farming that is...it's really hard work... Unfortunately many folks do not wish to live on a farm much less work on one.. Thanks to the migrant workers who do this work or we wouldn't have fresh veggies and fruits.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - wake up at 4am...slop the hogs, get the eggs, feed the chickens, milk the cows, put out the hay and some other things before you even get to eat breakfast. ugh...my dad has described every detail...Don't know how he did it...or how any farmer does it. God bless the farmers....and their families...my grandparents and great grandparents are German immigrants...hard workers and tough folk.
