The kid, of course, is inspiring ... but I have to hand it to the mother as well. She was attentive, supportive, and encouraging ... but didn't detract from the child's achievement by simply picking him up and moving him to the top of the slide. I started out wondering why she didn't do that ... and then it dawned on me that she was helping him prepare for a life of achievement and independence ... not one of dependency. Good on her ... a form of tough love that I suspect was harder on her than it was on the child.
