When dealing with any memory or storage you have to be cognizant of the chain of evidence. They didn't want to just read the data, they needed to copy it for analysis, without modifying it. It's easy to armchair QB their decision to use the expensive route, but from what I can read about the option you linked to, this is not necessarily the most desired solution. Without that knowledge (which no one here has) you really have no room to judge.
