Current day mines are nothing like the horned steel spheres chained to the bottom as seen in the movies. Naval mines shaped like cylinders can be easily camouflaged and embedded. They can be set to rise based on certain signatures unique to each ship. They can be remotely controlled to swim and settle and wait for scheduled activation. Today’s mines will (not “could”) render a combatant ship incapable of functioning...think jet engine powered generators which power propulsion or are geared to the shafts.
There is an old saying known to surface ship warriors—-every ship can be a minesweeper—once.
We didn’t clear Haiphong Harbor all by ourselves... the North knew where the mines were and wanted them up as well.
