IRS Warns Low- to Middle-Income Taxpayers Could Make Up Bulk of Tax Audits

IRS: If you don't give us what we want, our only choice is to stop auditing the rich and do even MORE auditing of the poor.
Americans: Couldn't you, I don't know, stop auditing the poor and focus only on the rich?
IRS: What? No way?!? If we admitted that was possible, what kind of threats would we have to build public pressure? No, your choices are a bunch of money for moderate poor audits and occasional rich audits or less money for a boatload of poor audits and no rich audits. FUND US OR THE POOR PEOPLE WILL PAY!!!!!

Ii wonder what would happen if the US went to a VAT type taxation model. I know one thing, there'd be a lot of IRS personnel looking for real jobs.
