I do not think it is necessary. We are a nation that placed our military under civilian leadership to ensure there is a check on the military. A good President, as the Commander-in-Chief, will appoint a good SecDef to advise them on the military issues. I think it is more important for the SecDef to have military experience.

My current boss, also a veteran, makes a similar argument (though your SecDef comment is new). I would argue that a veteran is technically a civilian, so we would not be removing the military from civilian control.

I would say to have a President or VP with military experience is a definite plus in todays perilous times....
