She was my first sea duty in the USN back in 1963 to 1964 when I joined her in the Mediterranean while deployed. I was a young Radioman Seaman High Speed CW Operator standing 12 hour watches. My second tour on-board Enterprise was my first sea duty as a Warrant Officer (Electech & Navcomm) in 1970 to 1972 where I qualified OOD and Surface Warfare Officer.

Retire early? Was this ship with multiple nuclear reactors still seaworthy? Could she have stayed in service longer?

Retire Early- No Carriers are designed for a 50 year service life. She may have been seaworthy but having 8 reactors vice the 4 NIITZ class CVN's have (and is the only ship with that type of reactor) probably made it cost prohibitive to do so. She could of stayed in service longer if the gov't kept throwing money at it. Near the end of their service life ships tend to spend equal amounts of time in repair availabilities as they do underway.
