Jasmine Crockett insists 'it's not a crime' to illegally cross the border

I am not an Attorney, however under U.S. federal law, crossing the border without proper authorization is a crime. Specifically, Title 8 of the U.S. Code, Section 1325 ("Improper Entry by Alien") classifies illegal entry as a federal misdemeanor for a first offense, with penalties that can include up to six months in prison. A subsequent offense can be treated as a felony, carrying harsher penalties. This law applies to individuals entering the United States outside of designated ports of entry or without valid documentation.

She completed law school and passed the bar examination in 2006. After graduating from University of Houston Law Center, Crockett worked as a civil rights attorney and a public defender in Bowie County, Texas. Given her background it begs the question of how she arrived at her opinion that it's not illegal to cross the border.
