The Jesuits have played a strong role in Catholicism and continue to do so.

St. Ignatius and his merry band of Jesuits, whether deliberately or not, became the “shock troops” of the Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation. They were quite effective in bringing whole swaths of Europe back from Luther’s reforms of the Catholic Church. I saw first-hand the historical implications of that around 9 years ago where in Jelenia Gora, Poland the largest and most ornate Lutheran Church I have ever seen has the name of a Roman Catholic Church. My host Pastor informed me that during the Counter-Reformation, it was “procured” by the local Jesuits and never returned to the Lutherans. It is largely intact from the Lutheran days there.....I naively asked if, now that the Russians are gone and Poland is independent if the Roman Catholics will return the confiscated sanctuary, he smiled and said “Not in God’s lifetime”.
