This is the second post today reminding me of a brush I had with history. After my tour of duty in Vietnam, I was stationed in Hawaii where an E-8 in my command wore just one ribbon, a Silver Star with an OLC. Now that's curious I thought but rather than ask I went to read his personnel record. There I uncovered an amazing story of a boy, just 13, big for his age, who enlisted and went to Europe with the AEF to fight in WWI. Following the war he went back to the farm, then reenlisted for WWII. Same for Korea. By the time I met him, he was finishing 20 years active duty, every day in wartime service. Yes, he had earned countless service ribbons and a host of awards and decorations, but only wore the Silver Star with OLC. The reason I discovered to two aging pieces of paper, dried out and beginning to flake at the edges, two awards of the Silver Star both signed by John J. Pershing.

SSG Carlos Madden - Generally, I have a very good memory for people, but it was a bad time in my life when I met him. But that's another story. The upshot is that I don't remember his name. Another enlisted man who served under me in Hawaii, later after I had been kicked out of my first assignment in Hawaii, completed 27 years active duty as an E-5, and was retired to the duty station of his choice as an E-8. A man whom you would be surprised to find in the Army inasmuch as he was intellectually challenged. Again, another story.

CPT Jack Durish - You need to write a memoir of all these people you've encountered.
