John Philip Souza was also a graduate of the Bordentown military Institute, Bordentown, NJ As a Cadet at BMI He was a member of the Band. One of the Practice session there which included a parade of the Corp of Cadet Sousa, a drummer, told a fellow Cadet, I'm going to pick up the beat, just listen to what I do. Well the march was on and He instead of playing what He should have had a quicker drum tempo and and the marching step picked up and got a bit confusing. The Commandant, then Major Theodore D. Landon heard this and called Cadet Souza up in front of Him for that infraction and gave Him an Hour of Penalty Guard duty in His free time. . Cadet Souza tried to talk His way out of it by saying He was trying to learn His General orders and needed the time for that. Major Landon then informed Him in that case You will spend this entire weekend in a classroom studying those General orders and I expect You to be able to recite them to Me on Monday plus He still had to do the Penalty Tour. That didn't exactly work out the way Cadet Souza hoped it would.

Major Landon was a Veteran of both the Spanish American War and also WWI and rose to the rank of Brigadier General and again became Commandant at BMI. Sousa had also graduated from Princeton University in 1904.
