It's not entirely true that the troops have never gone unpaid. Some National Guard drill pay was delayed in 2018, and the Coast Guard went unpaid in 2020. Still, what we're looking at today is different.

Under Carter in either ‘79 or’80 we went without pay. Thankfully my wife was still working so it didn’t hurt too bad.

Yep. Carter's AG reinterpreted some point of law, triggering the first ever government shutdown. Makes sense that that would catch the government flat-footed and you would go unpaid. We need Bondi to reverse that interpretation back to the old way and just not have shutdowns. I guess what they had before was automatic implied continuing resolutions.

Lt Col Charlie Brown This shutdown is ridiculous. The democrats just need to pass the temporary bill and then hash it out. Military personnel should not have to go without pay, period.

The very thought of our military going without pay is crazy. This part of our government is broken and needs to be fixed ASAP. A platoon sergeant standing in front of his troops, what do you tell these young troops, when they ask: How do I feed the kids???? We need to all think about this when we go to VOTE.
