This episode aired when i a young teen, it sparked a conversation with my father (1960s Navy vet) about comrades dying. He never experienced the death of a shipmate, but had friends who had shipmates who died. His honesty and willingness bridged the gap that often builds between teens and parents, and made realize i could talk to my parents about anything. I sometimes wonder if it helped me cope with soldiers deaths when i was a medic (not my unit, but other soldiers who did die)

That was a touching end of the character, I was a little choked up.
