"Three final and concluding observations on these historic lessons might be useful. The first is a well-known military leadership lesson: ‘no plan survives first contact with the enemy.’ In the case of Operation Market Garden that was certainly the case as the plan, and its various sub plans, seemed to fall like a pack of dominoes as the Armoured Division attempted to move through the bridgeheads captured by paratroopers.
