I have a similar story that I read a long time ago and I'm still trying to find it. It was about an American who was called up to active duty prior to the beginning of World War II. The National Guard had been called up for a year of active duty and they had extended the draft another year. Not sure if you was from the draft or from the guard or Reserve. He left his post on the east coast and went to Canada. He signed up over there and learned to fly in Alberta, Canada. He became a B-24 Liberator pilot probably flying in the Squadron adjacent to the Squadron that this person was flying and was also doing anti-submarine missions as well. He got probably 2 pilot officer or the equivalent rank of Captain in the Canadian Air Force. After the war, he went to college, he married a Canadian and after college he went and turned himself in the US Military. He spent about 30 days in the brig and he was able to get records from the Canadian military supporting his Superior Service. The Jag attorney or judge dropped all charges as long as he did not ask for his back pay since he had deserted back in 1941. Funny story but I can't find the article! Many Americans went to fight for the Canadians or the British prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. If anybody has this story, please post a deer because I originally read it in my military history magazines and I can't find the article!
