I use http://www.meetup.com/ to find local technical groups and other types of groups. Nice feature of meetup.com is you can sign up to be notified of group gatherings. I use it a lot for WordPress development and other computer related user groups.
Find Meetups and meet people in your local community who share your interests.

I've searched meetup.com to find a Linux LUG but the closest active one is in NYC. It is an active site, though.

SGT (Join to see) - I never thought about how useful meetup.com would be if you aren't close to a larger population area. I'm about 20 miles from Ann Arbor MI and Toledo OH and not too much farther from Detroit. No shortage of groups here. Have you considered creating a group in your area on meetup? As we used to say in the USAF: run it up the flagpole and see who salutes.

MSgt Richard Rountree - I like that quote. Stealing it! There is a LUG here but it seems dormant. I'm trying to get a hold of the webmaster to create buzz in it again. I have considered it, though. Thanks.

Have you explored military correspondence courses, this is another good area for information.

Yes. I use JKO, Skillport, and about a dozen others. I'm looking for something that has a more social aspect to it, such as IRC channels and, er, human interaction.
