CSS Albemarle, a Confederate ironclad, played an important role in the Battle at Plymouth. Following the battle, CSS Albemarle returned to Plymouth where it remained a deterrent against Union forces going up the Roanoke River. Determined to eliminate the threat, Union military leaders sought someone daring enough to mount an unconventional attack on the ironclad: Lt. William Cushing.
