There was a similar case involving United Airlines, but judge dismissed case for technicality (court was in Chicago and blogger who promoted trick was not located there).
Issue is how people perceive airline tickets. By legal definition, it is a contract of carriage. You have written contract for airline to transport yourself and luggage to a destination. By getting off at layover or alternate spot, they perceive it as a violation. We'll see what happens...
