I don't think it's as nefarious as it seems. A lot of people don't know that they have the right to NOT stand and do the pledge. It's absolutely voluntary (as it should be). In many places, a child who doesn't want to stand or do the pledge is told that it is "mandatory." It's not. I don't see anything wrong with telling parents that they can make a decision about their child's education.
Same goes with sex-ed, but I suspect that many of the people who object to this had no problem with the school telling parents that sex-ed was optional and that they could opt their kids out.
