(CNN)—This Monday, we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the federal holiday in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
It's a holiday that thankfully has been gaining in recognition since Congress passed a bill and President Ronald Reagan signed it in 1983, designating the third Monday in January, starting in 1986, to honor the civil rights leader. For years, some states declined to participate in the holiday, and Arizona lost the opportunity to host a Super Bowl over it. In 2000, South Carolina became the last state to recognize the holiday.

How can you not respect a man who was able to guide people with non-violent methods in a time of great societal turmoil. He helped temper the clashes of differences when it would have been easier to channel the hate.

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL I celebrate this day like I do every other day. I ask God for guidance and spend the day trying to follow His instruction.
From all accounts, Dr. King was a humble man thrust into the limelight. Like all men and women he had failings; but. I believe he was used by god to build bridges within the black community and across this nation and in fact throughout teh world.

LTC Stephen F. thank you for your earnest words of Dr. King. Well said and articulately expressed. He did a lot for humility and all. I truly thank him for his works. I visited center in Atlanta in 2008. Very touching!
