This city was a retirement community for Republican guard and Saddam Hussein era Iraqi intelligence. It was a hotbed for problems while I was stationed in the kirkuk, Iraq from December 2004 to October 2005. The Talon was corrupt and would not cooperate with American forces and sometimes they even did things like trying to destroy power lines. I would not be surprised of them discovering bodies of people murdered by ISIS and discovered later. This is a sad Revelation for all those who lost their lives and recently, the Iraq government pushed out the Kurds who took over when the Iraq he Army fled a few years back. This ongoing feud between the Kurds and the Iraqi government shows that Iran and turkey are behind this because they do not want Kurdish Independence. Kurdish Independence would have meant a stable Northern Iraq but everybody wants their oil and nobody wants the Kurds to be independent ever!

Sgt Wayne Wood - as a first lieutenant, I always worked the Tactical operations center and I would go to meetings in place of the executive officer or the operations officer. I was Battalion to Brigade liaison. I would compile reports and submit them daily to higher. The last 12 next 24 Etc. I remember going to a targeting meeting where they would discuss the effectiveness of talks with the city council or with adjacent cities. I specifically remember them telling me about Al hawija as being a crooked City where they could not make any efforts to gain their trust or to get any information. In one instance, attack Aviation observed a power line getting blown up. 1 Helicopter pursued a truck with Rebels racing into Al hawija were they kept eyes on and then they told the quick reaction force where they were while the other helicopter stopped the other vehicle until the quick reaction force arrested them. Blowing up a power line was considered infrastructure which meant that was a critical event where the Commanding General was notified. I was there in our tactical operations center when the battle major in charge of the watch called the Tactical operations center to attention! I know it's old news from 12 years ago but it just adds to the context of Al h a w i j a today. I was with the 116th Cav Brigade 2nd battalion liaison officer. This is my recollection of what happened.
