Thinking back to my transition from military to civilian life, I believe that no civilian job could match the challenges I experienced or the satisfaction I felt in the military. Indeed, most civilian jobs seemed silly by comparison. One of the problems is that most corporations are regulated by bureaucrats and, thus, have come to resemble bureaucracies. Now, I worked for Social Security before enlisting, and have some experience to base my opinion upon. The major difference between government bureaucracies and the military is that bureaucracies lack mission orientation. Well, that's true in many corporations. Under the weight of government regulation, they are more concerned with following regulations than in their mission, earning a profit. As Mike Rowe repeatedly points out, there are plenty of jobs in trades where you are challenged every day and go home with a sense of satisfaction as well as a paycheck. None of these require a college degree. They require skills. That's something military people have and are adept at developing new ones. Think about it...
