And be careful of the VA. I knew a guy that was rated at 70% disability for 15 years and the VA screwed up when it should have been 90% And he could have used that money all that time. Make sure the VA comes through with your disability rating and double-check because the doctors made a mistake I just think what 90% versus 70% for over a decade how much money he lost? He's looking forward for that big back pay check on disability.

My biggest tip if you are getting out or filing for an increase. Get copies of your military medical records and make your own own to keep. When you fill out your application mark each page with a tab and a reference number to that page on the application. This will help them find the proof needed. As a nurse I can say it is difficult to find things in medical records at times. Sometimes things are not filed in the correct place. You know what you are looking for and are only looking for your information the examiner is looking for hundreds of cases so what ever you can do to be your own advocate helps. Take your copy with you to the exam. Also do not be afraid to appeal any decision. The DAV will appoint an attorney for you free of charge. You will never meet this attorney but they will be your advocate and work for you and ensure your case is heard. This is a free service. Do not pay someone to do this for you, it is a waste of your money.

I was 80% and now 100% I had to go through the appeals process as a quadriplegic for both social security and va. Social security actually said I was too educated even when all the doctors said I would not be able to work and would be in the hospital for up to a year!
