SFC William Farrell What a detailed and interesting article about salutes!
I will vote for the “Improper/exaggerated salute”. What I chose to call an NCO Salute seems to fit those parameters.
I always thought it was super cool when PSGs and the 1SG would exchange a languid salute at formations. That salute was characterized by the right hand being slightly cupped, right elbow slightly forward and the right wrist slightly bent rather than forming a straight line with the forearm. Try it - does it work for you?
After meeting President Ford at an In-N-Out Hamburger place in California; upon my exiting the facility, I saluted him and the Secret Service agent with an ‘NCO Salute’. The Secret Service agent returned my salute - in kind!

Very nice CSM Charles Hayden. It works for me. Its great that you were able to run into resident Ford. I've never run into him but i have been there when his helicopter landed at the Wall Street heliport in NYC.
