Most Americans Don't Believe Media, Law Treat Them Fairly: I&I/TIPP Poll

Not only that 37 in a 35 Zone ? give Me a break, in 40 years of Police work I never even stopped a car that wasn't at least 15 miles over the posted Speed limit. Most people won't give an honest answer, I didn't ask questions I told them why the were stopped and what their speed was and then next after that asked for license and Registration. If i wrote a citation depended on all the circumstances. I gave more leeway if the limit was set so low it was plain foolish. It broke down of to what was Reasonable and proper. speed taking into account traffic volume, time of the day, road conditions etc. that may increase a hazard. I did write plenty of traffic tickets, the range from 300 to 950 per year Myself for moving traffic Violations of all sorts of infractions. No rule for it but between the hours of 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM we allowed a lot more leeway especially considering there wasn't much traffic at those hours. The risk to other using the road was greatly reduced as there were less people out there during those early morning hours. By the way our volume of tickets dropped because of our enforcement and more people obeying the traffic laws because of them and fatal traffic accidents dropped a lot which was a good thing. (drop from close to 1,000 to 350 to 300 citations, and a massive drop in injuries or deaths) I've investigated enough Fatal Traffic accidents I see that drop as a real positive. Our enforcement policies were also based on the offense, NOT someone's influence.

Having said all that, Safety and NOT media influence was the criteria. We actually did have good community relations and a Community Service Division in our Department helped educate people in schools as well as the public forum and that also produced great results.

SMSgt Lawrence McCarter - I was floored by the 37 in a 35 comment he made. I think the local state township officials and PD department heads were cracking about how they were left out of the primary protection detail that was passing by on the interstate. My rolling position was on a side road paralleling the main vehicle possession, flanking their movement. I was Support.
I never found out the real issue but I doubt it was my speed thru a sleepy hamlet in the hills. Five minutes, under the circumstances meant I was out of position (we had some leeway) by three minutes. Fortunately my shotgun radioed an alert to rush the column and the next outposter to adjust for our lack of coverage.
Of course he could have just been bored and wanted to stir the pot.
