The government's job is and never was meant to impede, deny, or censor speech. It is to be informative to the nation, to protect us, and to ultimately allow us to converse and decide for ourselves freely. When the government steps in to control information, and they are ultimately wrong, we lose even more faith in them. We have seen they have been wrong and more Americans in turn have become less confident the CDC has our health care in mind vs tinkering in a political arena. They made bad and inconsistent calls and it hurt them as an organization. Each and every one of our government agencies are required to be apolitical, to seek and present facts, and not to prevent others from articulating their own information (right or wrong). Fauci should have been relieved of duty when it became apparent he lied to Americans about masks. His duty isn't to get ahead of scared Americans who might make a run on masks based on CDC guidance that they might prevent the spread of COVID. It was to advise and provide expert medical information. Ultimately, he not only lied about masking multiple times, but apparently, he lied about several other things. The government is welcome to stand on a position their experts believe to be true and plaster it in the media, social networks, etc... But if or when it turns out that the experts are wrong, those experts need to be replaced.

You are absolutely right. This case was about the left (namely the Biden admin) politicizing the justice system. And they got told to stop.
