Interesting read - as to infrared reflective ropes and cords, I'd add infrared makers or paint - much like in cave diving to mark ones path.
As well comms that work deep underground - comms and GPS are not the same underground - through-the-Earth (TTE) signalling is needed and personal emergency devices (PED).
