Sure...in his dreams, no different than Goering and that German monster with the Luftwaffe, same book, different chapter, neither of them reckoned on Churchill, who also knew exactly what he was doing, most assuredly....

Oh yeah, like that was ever gonna happen, I've read numerous accounts of the woeful and abysmal lack of knowledge of Napoleon as a sailor...he didn't have a clue, he had competent admirals, however, Nelson whipped him at Trafalgar, and for exceedingly good reason, the man knew what he was doing, even if it cost him his life, in the end, unfortunately, despite his scandal with Lady Hamilton, which here was also a film made about with Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh....

The French “sought” an empire - the British HAD an empire. At least during this period, the British “hitched their star” to Strategic Sea Power, and they fought for their “homes and families” - not for conquest. The British fought within their strengths and resources (which were formidable), essentially on their own “turf” while the French got themselves over-extended (like the Germans in WWII) PLUS, the French were weaker in Naval assets/capability, tactics, and were unluckier.
