Two notes, an Oscar is easy to find especially with the modern systems on the Burke Class Destroyers and the new Poseidon aircraft so I would not characterizes this as "Searching" but if they are really there the US is tracking them. Also one key indicator that those subs are in that part of the Med would be the existence of a T-AGOS ship. Again they would search for maybe a day and would be on an Oscar like no ones business. Again I go back to my "Russian Junk" statement. I doubt very seriously that their old 1980 subs are able to operate that far from home without having serious issues that would require them to surface and that would be all over the news. This is why in 1992 I walked away from the ACINT community, I did not know how many people ONI would need in that program post Soviet collapse but I knew it was a lot less than what they had. So I went to college and got my commission while all the guys I worked with back then never got promoted.
