I was at my first assignment in ‘71 and we opened at 15 min to 0600 to feed 20 or more Waves flying over to Europe One of the other cooks asked why didn’t the Navy feed them. and fly them over? Maybe it was a security issue.. The media would suspect them flying out that way.. another is giving them commercial tickets.and split them up.. I found later that a constellation was used(like for medivac flights.) another diversion.. if asked why.. well had to ferry it over, May as well fill it up.. Media was all over asking stuff.. Somebody let out they were flying out of McGuire.. my guess was their U.S. Rep.. just to see their name in pront.. couldn’t give a dang about national security..
