A 21-year-old sailor was killed Saturday after he pulled off a California highway to help who he thought was a stranded driver.

Curtis Adams, an active duty of the Navy, stopped on the interstate around 2 a.m. Saturday when he and his girlfriend, who was also in the car, saw a motorist standing on the shoulder of the highway, police told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Adams was reportedly shot almost immediately after getting out of his car.
